Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya, often called "Little England," is a delightful town nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, celebrated for its cool climate and colonial-era charm. Situated at an elevation of 1,868 meters, this scenic destination is surrounded by verdant tea plantations, rolling hills, and cascading waterfalls.
The town's origins trace back to the British colonial era when it became a retreat for British officials. This influence is visible in the Tudor-style architecture, golf courses, and meticulously maintained gardens, such as Victoria Park. One of the highlights is the extensive tea estates, where visitors can tour the factories and learn about the intricate tea-making process.
Nuwara Eliya is also the starting point for exploring Horton Plains National Park, known for the breathtaking World's End viewpoint and diverse wildlife, including sambar deer and endemic birds. Lake Gregory, centrally located in the town, offers activities such as boating and horseback riding.
The annual April flower show and horse races further enhance Nuwara Eliya's appeal, drawing both locals and tourists. With its combination of natural beauty and colonial heritage, Nuwara Eliya offers a unique and refreshing experience.
